Girlhood, Twin Peaks and National Theatre Live: What To Watch This Week

Girlhood

The suburbs of Paris have seen their fair share of on-screen representation over the years, but this is a new take on the banlieues. Girlhood sees Marieme join an all-girl gang in her neighbourhood, and documents the fallout from her erratic behaviour when peer pressure kicks in. Well worth checking out at the IFI or Lighthouse this week.

A Twin Peaks / R Kelly live A/V Show

This is a screening with a difference - combining two obscure obsessions for a night of pure ridiculousness. This Friday the 15th, the Underground Cinema Room, Generator, Smithfield will host Twin Kelly a group of musicians who will perform two live shows. Kicking things off with some live improv while an episode of Twin Peaks plays, they will then perform R Kelly's back catalogue so expect a few giggles, great music and plenty of this:

8 ½

Federico Fellini’s stunning film 8½ returns exclusively to the screen at the IFI after being restored recently. Watch a film director suffering from creative block immediately after making a big hit, whilst being hounded by everyone in his life. He has never been more in demand in his life, yet his creative juices have run dry. This 1963 film is as good now as it was when first released, and the restoration only makes it more appealing.

NT Live: Man and Superman

This is a unique opportunity to see Ralph Fiennes perform live on the stage of London's Lyttelton Theatre, whilst being broadcast to over a 1,000 cinemas across the globe. You can catch a live screening of this tonight at The Lighthouse Cinema, or at Cineworld, both kicking off at 7pm. The play, which is just under 4 hours long, is one of George Bernard Shaw's finest works, and definitely worth going to his evening if you're at a loose end.
