Best-of
Dublin is a city filled with incredible artists, but with so many galleries and art spaces around the city, it's hard to keep tabs on what's going on. If you're looking for Irish art and exhibitions, The Centre for Creative Practices is a good place to start. It's an event venue, a gallery and a space for creative minds to come together, where artists can collaborate and bounce ideas off each other. It's a multifunctional space which is used for exhibitions, lectures and workshops as well as evening events. This January there will be two great exhibitions coming to the Centre for Creative Practices that you should check out.
The first is a cool exhibition focusing on the Calton area of Glasgow, a destination for Irish migrants to Scotland at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibition includes a series of documentary photographs in analogue, black and white portraits, and colour portraits of the artist's daughter. As a homage to the generations of Irish women whose identities were formed in this place, the portraits reinscribe the meaning of connection and rupture traditional gender stereotypes. It'll be a nice, thought-provoking exhibition to take a peek at some lunchtime and runs from the 15th to the 23rd January.
The second is an exhibition entitled "Sonnet" by Sandy Kennedy which is an installation made with paper, thread and graphite. It concentrates on the only written line of the Shakespearean 'Sonnet 'O No it is an ever fixed mark'. The exhibition investigates and plays with ideas of subtle perceptions, and the senses most associated with memory. The multimedia exhibition includes paintings, drawings, installation and film, and you could find yourself losing a few hours enraptured in the works which are open from the 29th January to 6th Februay. As well as exhibitions, they frequently have really cool things going on, so it's well worth bookmarking their website and popping back every few weeks.
